Breakin' Convention is Sadler’s Wells’ critically acclaimed international festival of hip hop dance theatre, returning for its seventh year from Saturday 1 – Bank Holiday Monday 3 May 2010. The festival is hosted by Breakin’ Convention artistic director and MC Jonzi D, who presents crews from every street corner of the globe.

The line-up for Breakin’ Convention 2010 promises to include some of the world’s finest poppers, lockers, house dancers, b-boys and b-girls, and is announced in January 2010. Previous performers at Breakin’ Convention include ZooNation; Pied Piper creators Boy Blue; legendary hip hop pioneer Ken Swift; gravity defying champions Project Soul from Korea; the innovator Mr. Wiggles and Britain’s Got Talent favourites Flawless.

As well as performances, the festival weekend has an incomparable workshop programme taught by pioneering artists, live graffiti and aerosol art commissions on the foyer walls, and award-winning DJ crew Tha En4cers playing old skool funk and breakbeats to packed circles.

Having sold out for six consecutive years, Breakin’ Convention has become a major event in the hip hop dance calendar. Alongside the festival, Breakin’ Convention runs a year-round programme of events and a national tour is planned for October 2010.

Tonight it is his party rocking skills that interest us the most and we are guaranteed not to be disappointed. The last time he rocked The Doctor's Orders crowd back in December 2008 a packed house thoughts Xmas had come early as they were left no option but to shake their stuff to his incredible selection of fun packed platters.

Performing live on the night is one of Hip-Hop's true innovators Ty. Over the last 10 years Ty has developed a sound that is distinctly British and always fun with 3 albums and over 400 releases that have seen him nominated for a Mercury prize. It is however for his live shows that he is best known and that The Doctor's Orders have been trying to track him down for ages. We are sure that the typically packed house will enjoy the live show that have seen him perform alongside Damon Albarn, as part of his African Express, with Pee Wee Ellis, in tribute to James Brown and alongside all time legends De La Soul.

We are also over the moon to welcome back The Nextmen that we have been looking forward to have come and unleash their usual brand of party stylings. Having played at The Doctor's Orders launch party four and a half years ago they have remained good friends but having become international stars rocking festivals and parties throughout the world this is the first chance we have had to invite them back to see things through to the early hours as they close off what is certain to be an incredible night.

Spin Doctor as ever is sure to be one of the highlights of the night as he blesses the crowd to another of his trademark sets of classic and brand new Hip-Hop that has seen The Doctor's Orders become London's most popular party. He is set to be joined by his host and new partner in crime MC Prancster as they continue to show people how to really party.

The only man to have played at any where near as many of The Doctor's Orders events over the years as resident & promoter Spin Doctor is Mr Thing and there is one simple reason for that. By both our and our regulars opinion he is the best Hip-Hop DJ in the city and it is always a pleasure to hear him play.

Warming things up for us on this February night is one of the rising stars of the UK scene producer and DJ The Last Skeptik. Having already done sterling work at various of our events last year this young man that has been creating beats for many of the UK's hottest MCs and indie cats and is a name to look out for in 2010.

Keeping the whole show moving in his unique style is the host with the most MC Prancster. Having held down mic duties for Spin Doctor on New Year's Eve there was such an easy connection that these two are going to be making it a proper double act in 2010.

The BBC’s black music digital station, BBC Radio 1Xtra, has secured an incredible line up of highly acclaimed UK music artists, including Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, Taio Cruz, Jay Sean and JLS for its flagship live music event - 1Xtra Live.

The event, which takes place at the Sheffield Arena on Saturday 28th November, will see the artists performing across two stages in front of up to 12,000 people, making it the biggest standalone event in the station’s history.

The event was announced in Trevor Nelson’s Radio 1 and 1Xtra simulcast show on Saturday 24th October.

Speaking on the show, Dizzee said: “I’m looking forward to 1Xtra Live. I made some of my first album in Sheffield. It’s going to be good. Big up everybody who will be coming down!”

The event is to be co-hosted by Trevor Nelson and Mistajam while Tim Westwood will be tearing down the house as DJ for the night.

1Xtra Live will broadcast on a special simulcast show on Radio 1 and 1Xtra, presented by Trevor and Mistajam. Ace and Vis will be in the crowd speaking to the audience while Max gets all the gossip from backstage.

Trevor Nelson says: “1Xtra Live will without doubt be the hottest home grown gig, with no less than five acts who have had number one hits in the last couple of years. It’s going to be 1Xtra’s biggest gig to date.”

Highlights of the event will also transmit in a special 30 minute programme on BBC Three, presented by Radio 1’s Reggie Yates.

Tickets are free and will be limited to two per person. They will be available to personal callers at the Sheffield Arena box office from 10am until 4pm on Sunday 1st November. They will be distributed on a first come first served basis.

Billed as a ‘rap opera’, Markus the Sadist tells the story of a talented young battle MC from South London who is picked up by a scheming A&R with the promise of fame and wealth. The dialogue is delivered to a large extent through rhyme, with quite a bit of rapping throughout. The composer and musical director of the show is talented musician Soweto Kinch, and with Jonzi D as artistic director, the play has a strong team behind it.

Bashy shines as lead character Markus, a Brixton rapper whose mother advises him to “put down the mic” and concentrate on his studies and focus on getting a conventional career. Nolan Weekes also stands out as cunning A&R man Top Blizzy, representing the darker side of the industry, persuading Markus to change his British accent to an American one and convincing him that those that spend money on records “don’t want to hear a nerd spit”. He gives Markus the moniker which he subsequently adopts, and when one of the characters point out that Markus is “such a nice boy”, Blizzy slyly says “leave that to me”.

The audience were clearly very involved in the action on stage, cheering along and responding in all the right places, and when Bashy’s character’s trousers dropped, all the girls whooped and applauded, cementing his place as a real UK sex symbol.

While the play is a satire of the music industry, illustrating how rappers often have to change their style in order to become popular, there are parts that are somewhat silly and over the top. An example is that in the modern world of UK rap, whilst it is true that many artists who make it sound different to how they did before reaching commercial popularity, it is not a given that they are required to change their accent to sound American, something which was more common in previous decades. As a play that is set in 2004, this seemed like a somehow outdated and unbelievable addition to the story, although it did add an element of humour to the show. The new lyrics Markus adopts are also a bit ridiculous, but then as a satire, perhaps this is required in order to deliver the underlying message clearly and concisely.

After taking Blizzy’s advice, Markus’ transformation is rapid and he needs little persuading, perhaps serving to show how desperate many artists are to make it, regardless of the costs. He soon becomes an international superstar, and it is apparent that a choice has been made between being a nice person and becoming a rap mogul. The story then takes an unanticipated twist, and the ending is even more unexpected, making this is an entertaining show which kept the audience involved throughout.

Skepta of grime wonder-group Boy Better Know is back with his second
single from the sophomore album Microphone Champion; Lush. Following
on from the hype of Too Many Man, this takes us back into the dance
for a smoother rendezvous with the ladies.

British pop singer-songwriter Jay Sean sings the smooth chorus,
bringing a sexy RnB vibe to the Skepta-produced anthem. As Sean sings
over the electro sounds, Skepta confides; ‘its not the champagne
dance, it’s the champagne tour…’ as he talks us through a tale of lust
at first sight across a club.

Hype-hunters needn’t worry; a remix courtesy of H20, Fuzzy Logik and
Rudekid featuring Boy Better Know band mates Jammer and Frisco will
also be doing the airwave rounds.

As the managing director of Grime movement Boy Better Know, Skepta is
currently enjoying a wave of success at the top of the pile. Behind
him lies a string of sell out shows and the BBK legacy that has
defined a generation of Grime internationally.

Skepta is part of an early set of grime MC’s who defined the genre in
the early ‘noughties’. His peers including Wiley, Tinchy Stryder and
Dizzee Rascal have been enjoying the heights of the UK charts of late,
with newcomers such as Chipmunk setting the standards for the younger
generation of grime MC’s rising through the ranks.

The craze became associated with the mainstream when Skepta gave the
nation the moves with Rolex Sweep. Cue an International celebrity
craze as Hip Hop legend Busta Rhymes and TV’s Paul O'Grady attempted
to recreate the steps. Coldplay's Chris Martin performed his own
rendition during a gig at Brixton Mass and the iconic Timmy Mallett
created the Boy Better Know 'Sweep Show'!

Insane in the Brain:
A Street-dance Version of 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'

An adaptation of the hugely successful film / novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest, Insane in the Brain is a modern version of the renowned drama, performed almost entirely through dance. Swedish street-dance crew Bounce light up the stage, keeping the audience captivated throughout the hour and a half duration of this colourful, lively and entertaining spectacle.

DJ Krush, Cypress Hill, Punjabi MC and Dizzee Rascal all feature on the uptempo hip-hop heavy soundtrack, but there is also a smattering of dance music, funk and even an 80s sequence, complete with a leotard-clad girl and a well-oiled muscle man to entertain the audience, which was made up of mostly young people.

There are humourous elements to the show, including one scene where the group get caught sneaking out to the cinema, and what follows clearly delighted the audience, judging by the rapturous laughter.

The warning of violence on the ticket might seem alarming, but in fact this is a reference to the very end, which is instrumental to the story and not gory by any measure - no blood and guts in sight. There is also a sex-scene but this too is tastefully done, with the lighting disguising the action, making it suggestive rather than graphic.

The plot is brought to life and translated into dance skilfully, and it is not necessary to know the story in order to fully appreciate this show, as it completely stands up on its own. There is a bit of acting, but mostly the cast do what they do best and that’s dance. The choreography is definitely on-point; the dancing fluid and in-sync, and the sound, lighting and set unfaultable. Definitely a must see.

Written and directed by Jonzi D who continues to set a precedent within Hip Hop theatre and dance, this modern rap fable includes brand new music from MOBO award winning jazz innovator Soweto Kinch. Bashy, a rising UK star and critically acclaimed musician/writer who won Most Inspiring Act at the Urban Music Awards in 2008.

Jay-Z joins forces with Rihanna and Kanye West for his brand new single, ‘Run This Town’ - set for release on August 31 via Roc Nation. Since its very first worldwide radio debut play at 9:11EST on July 24, the track has garnered much attention in the UK, enjoying spot plays on stations across the country. Produced by No-ID and Kanye West, it’s already A-listed at Radio 1Xtra, B-listed at Radio 1 and C-listed at both Choice FM and the Galaxy Network to name a few.

‘Run This Town’ is the first single proper to come from the hotly anticipated - The Blueprint 3 album, out in the UK on September 14. Following their celebrated run at London’s Peacock Theatre in spring 2008, Swedish company Bounce return with Insane in the Brain, their acclaimed production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest reworked as a feast of stunning street dance. Injecting a healthy dose of contemporary styles fused with breathtaking hip hop moves, Bounce once again present their powerful adaptation of the play by Dale Wasserman and novel by Ken Kesey at the Peacock Theatre this autumn, prior to an extensive national tour.

In the confines of a psychiatric hospital, breakdance becomes a way of expressing freedom and rebelling against the iron rule of Nurse Ratched – who happens to be a ballet fan… Insane in the Brain features a pulsating soundtrack with cuts from Missy Elliot, Dizzee Rascal, Gotan Project, David Holmes and Cypress Hill.

Inventive set design and choreography are mixed with film and multimedia sequences to produce a fast-paced show that is funny, moving and packed with high-octane dance. This production follows the self-titled Bounce, 2002’s ‘High-energy celebration’; that thrilled audiences at Sadler’s Wells prompting a return invitation for this innovative crew. The company was formed in late 1997 by a group of Sweden’s leading street dancers who formed a collective in order to explore different techniques of breaking, locking, popping, boogaloo and new school. Not afraid to use any style to create fresh and exciting work, Bounce also utilises lindy hop and tap, as these genres have influenced many generations of street dancers.

Dance Touring Partnership’s (DTP) vision is to bring the best of middle-scale dance to as many people as possible. DTP is an entrepreneurial venue partnership which includes the country’s most forward-looking and influential middle-scale venues.

Bounce will be traveling to leading venues all over the UK during this two month tour. Dates extend to key theatres in Cornwall, the midlands, Scotland, the south coast and the north, giving the UK the first opportunity this autumn to view this unique production outside of London.

This is a message from the editor. As well as running this blog, I will also now be running my own personal blog www.annanathanson.wordpress.com which will have more personal perspectives, although I will continue to update this one as well. Check out one of my first blog entries below, from a few days ago:

Meeting Raekwon

Just had the most surreal experience this evening! Went to interview Raekwon from the Wu Tang Clan, and Soneni came too and filmed it, and what was meant to be a one-hour slot turned into three and a half hours of hanging out with the veteran rapper and his manager Mel!

We arrived at 4.30pm at the Marble Arch hotel, and Cookie who organised everything was amazing, making us feel really welcome and offering us a cup of tea which I felt guilty for having as it was nearly a fiver! We were then introduced to Mel, who happily shared his drinks and told us all about the early days of Wu at the start of the nineties, some interesting perspectives and some insider goss on Jay Z, who he went to school with; all fascinating stuff!
He then gave us a sneak preview of the entire 24-track album two months prior to its release in the UK, talking us through each track!

After that it was time to meet Rae, who we immediately warmed too with his welcoming presence and friendly, down to earth demeanor. Believe it or not he was watching Big Brother when we walked in, admitting that he watches it “a bit”. He spoke of the follow up to his 1995 monumental rap classic ‘Only Built 4 Cuban Linx’, why it had taken so long and what feedback he expects this time around. Without giving too much away, The Chef has done it again, you won’t be disappointed people!

Raekwon was the nicest celeb you could meet, far from the stereotype of the unapproachable rapper you might have expected. In fact, perhaps the friendliest I have ever interviewed, a place previously occupied by the lovely Beverly Knight. After the interview we continued to chat, and I put poor Soneni on the spot by making her sing acapella in front of Rae! “That’s my next new artist!” he said when she’d finished, singing her praises and agreeing to a collaboration and offering lots of advice. He even bigged up little ol’ me, saying I was “amazing” and that I “know my hip hop”! Before we finally left, he gave us his number and email address and said he’d definitely stay in touch! “I wasn’t expecting two ladies to walk in, y’all have mad energy!” he added as we left. What a crazy evening!

Multi-talented artist Soneni is all at once a singer, songwriter, lyricist and poet. She has been musically active now for over a decade, penning her first song at the age of twelve and going on to perform extensively on the London and Brighton open mic circuit. The 25 year old says of her music; “it’s a cocktail of my life’s stories and journeys, of the poetry that’s come with that, and the lessons learnt”. London born with Zimbabwean roots, the artist has an array of musical influences, as diverse as Nas, Queen, Miriam Makeba, to Laryn Hill and Richard Ashcroft. “I like musicians who have something to say but can entertain you at the same time”, she states.

After years of perfecting her craft, Soneni now releases her debut single Starstruck, which has been described by DJ Ras Kwame as a “sublime piece of soulful house". In late 2008, this very song was not only broadcast on BBC 1xtra, but selected out of hundreds of tracks to be one of three songs used as part of the BBC 1xtra HomeGrown podcast, distributed to around 20,000 listeners. “I’ve got a lot of love for them for that support, it was a real confidence boost”, says Soneni. “My goal is to uplift and inspire, but also to convey a message. I feel that I’ve been given a gift with my music and I want to share it with as many people as possible”.

Big Smoke, like everyone else all over the world, has been deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of the legend that is Michael Jackson, which has dominated the news today.

The show ended in 2005 when NEMESIS had to move to Brighton to study music production.

During this period NEMESIS & ARROGANCE continued to record and produce together. Culminating in the release of their independent debut album ‘LEND ME YOUR EARS’, which created an underground buzz with the success of the first two singles, ‘CHANGE YOUR HEART’ Feat. With World Championship winners over the years including the superstar likes of the Scratch Perverts, A-Trak (Kanye West's DJ), Q Bert, Craze and Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), fame and respect could well accompany the bountiful prizes on offer. The Wu-Tang Clan Rapper has signed a deal with EMI music services to release his hotly anticipated follow-up to his 1995 hip-hop classic this summer!

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 features Dr. Dre, J Dilla, The RZA and others.

Ready to give his worldwide following what they’ve been waiting for, the Wu-Tang Clan’s rhyme slinger extraordinaire Raekwon is set to return this summer with Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2.

Raekwon, whose 1995 classic Only Built 4 Cuban Linx was universally hailed as a rap classic and has SoundScanned more than 1.1 million units, has signed a distribution deal with EMI Music Services for his ICEH20 Records to release Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2.

“The wait is finally over,” Raekwon says, “Words cannot describe how extremely happy I am to have EMI Music as a home for my album.”

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 buzz single and video “The New Wu” features fellow Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man and Ghostface Killah and is getting mixshow airplay at radio stations across the country, including Hot 97 in New York. Paul Wall grew up in Houston with a devout passion for music. Wall was one of Texas's most successful independent musicians, with releases like "The Chick Magnet", "How to be a Player" and his group albums with fellow Texan Chamillionaire such as "Get ya Mind Correct" and "Controversy Sells". His independent success earned him a major record deal with Swisha House Records' joint venture with Atlantic Records.

Wall's 2005 national debut "The People’s Champ" debuted in Billboard Magazine’s Top 200 at the number 1 spot and quickly reached Platinum status. In the spring of 2008, Paul Wall joined Strange Music recording artist Tech N9ne on a nationwide tour, which also featured Brooklyn rapper ILL BILL. He is currently a member of the diverse group Expensive Taste which includes Travis Barker (Blink – 182) and Skinhead Rob (The Transplants). The group also released a clothing line in which Paul Wall is a co owner and founder.

Wall has just released his 3^rd major label album "The Fast Life". Featuring the first single “Bizzy Body” featuring Webbie and Mouse the video premiered on Myspace on Friday 27^th March. Too $hort, Skinhead Rob, Tech N9Ne and Young Joc, and Z-Ro also feature on The Fast Life. When asked about “The Fast Life” album Paul replied “Its straight hood stuff, but we got some different stuff that I haven’t done before people are gonna like it when they hear it. My homeboy Travis Barker he jumped down and did a lot of production with me we had a lot of fun in the studio.”

The craze continued when Skepta (Boy Better Know) gave the nation the moves to match catchy bars with Rolex Sweep. Cue an International celebrity craze as Busta Rhymes and Paul O'Grady attempted to recreate the steps, Coldplay's Chris Martin performed his own rendition during a gig in Brixton Mass and Timmy Mallett created The Boy Better Know 'Sweep Show'!

Legendary emcee, producer, deejay and founding member of legendary New York crew, Diggin' In The Crates (D.I.T.C.) R&D Productions ‘Scratched Out’ was a sell out success at Lyric Theatre Hammersmith in July 2008. Due to popular demand Riverside Studios and Oval House Theatre have invited R&D Productions to develop this inspired piece of theatre with the support of Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Thames Community Foundation.

‘Scratched Out’ is an Urban Musical about six young people from an inner-city estate who all have ambitions of making it in the music industry. The story takes place during the course of one evening at a pirate radio station and a club. As the records spin, the drama unfolds revealing the soundtrack to a night that will permanently change the lives of these six characters.

This is a brand new production with an original Musical Theatre, R&B, Hip Hop, Classical and Grime score by Richard Hale (DJ Halo) and lyrics by award-winning writer Dean Atta.

The subject matter of this production covers issues that are relevant to young people and are delivered in an eye-catching and creative way that they can relate to. Grants for research are also awarded to King's College London, which is the university where the regular London Bridge Training sessions are held on the weekends.

To mark the 3rd Anniversary of his passing on 10th February 2006 & to celebrate what would have been his 34th Birthday on 7th February 2007 The Doctor’s Orders are throwing the third annual party dedicated to the memory and the music of this incredible Hip-Hop producer; J-Dilla.

Once again there has no been no shortage of top name DJs wanting to offer their services for free in order to mark their respect for the man who created the beats that keep clubs they work bumping week in week out. Nor will there be a shortage of the people who are looking to get in and party. These events have become the highlight of many Hip-Hop heads calendar and have been full to capacity within two hours of opening for the last 2 years so we mean it when we say arrive early to avoid disappointment!

In his brief 32 years J-Dilla, otherwise known as Jay-Dee or James Yancey created and shaped a new sound for Hip-Hop that inspired beat smiths, MCs and music lovers around the globe. With an incredible line of production credits for De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, The Pharcyde, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, Common, D’Angelo, his own crew Slum Village and so many more it is little wonder that J-Dilla has been described as a visionary, a genius & the quintessential producers’ producer by some of the most respected names in the game. The fact that both Pharell Williams & Kanye West name him as their major inspiration speaks volumes to the influence of his distinctive “Dilla sound”.

His own albums “Rough Draft” & “Donuts” on Stones Throw, “Welcome 2 Detroit” & “The Shining” on BBE Records alongside “Jay Loves Japan” and his work on his brother Illa-J’s album “Yancey Boys” stand out as masterpieces of modern music production and capture the imagination of producers, DJs & all music lovers across the world. Spin Doctor is firstly a massive fan of J-Dilla and as the driving force behind The Doctor’s Orders promotions so there was no way this event was not going to happen every year to celebrate the memory of his favourite producer bar none. It is his passion for Dilla’s work and this event in particular that has guaranteed that it is the not to be missed event of the year!

Having played at the launch party for J-Dilla’s “The Shining” (BBE Records) & both tribute nights so far Marc Mac (4Hero / Visioneers) is back on board again to show the influence his incredible body of work had on him as both a DJ & producer.New to the line up this year is a man who has enjoyed the privilege of working alongside and remixing beats for J-Dilla, Morgan Spacek. An incredible producer in his own right he will be among many new friends at this packed out night.

DJ Rags has been repping J-Dilla for as long as he has been spinning. As one of the residents of London’s Livin' Proof night he has experienced first hand the effect his beats can have on an educated dance-floor. DJ Lok who has never played a set without at least one J-Dilla beat slipped in somewhere. Grandmaster Flash in London!

With the legend that is Grandmaster Flash on the decks and the Alizé cocktails in full flow, the Alizé Remixed 2008 finale at Paper Nightclub proved that Alizé is a legendary Liqueur on the music scene.

Not only did the party celebrate the delicious liqueur's 21st birthday but it also marked the end of the Alizé Remixed nationwide tour where Alizé searched the country looking for the next best DJs. After finding winners in Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and London, the DJs came together for a once in a lifetime opportunity to support the turntable originator on the decks.

The classics were flowing, and for three hours Flash proved why he is known as the Grandmaster! With his cohort DJ Demo bigging up Alizé over the mic and Flash wowing the club with his scratching and mixing of hip hop anthems, the crowd were literally begging for more.

With soul, pop and even Rock on the play list, the party (and champagne corks!) were popping till the early hours. As the clocks rolled back an hour, London Alizé Remixed winner DJ Cable stepped up and continued what Flash had started.

When the lights came up, clubbers were refusing to leave and even started impromptu accapella performances to try and eek out the last of an amazing night! Party-goer Sam Lewis said "Man, Flash is a legend! The dance floor was literally rocking and girls were all up on the chairs with their shoes in their hands! There was even a cocktail named after him to mark the occasion. Just amazing!" Rising Magician Damien was on hand to dazzle the crowd with his mind blowing Alizé Bottle tricks! With all kinds of objects appearing in bottles and disappearing out of them into thin air people were left confused, amazed and excited!

One of the highlights on the night were the 6 infamous diamond encrusted Alizé bottles! Valued at over £2000,00 per bottle and blinging under the club lights, they were closely guarded by security as people queued to take photos! Famous owners of these limited edition diamond encrusted bottles include Beyonce Knowles and Sarah Harding! For those who missed out on the hottest night London has seen all year the Alizé Remixed kicks off again in 2009.

Kerchoonz.com - the much anticipated answer to the music industry’s current downloading problem – has already attracted thousands of musicians during its beta launch. Unsigned bands and artists will be paid every time their tracks are downloaded or listened to. Acts will receive half a penny for every play and up to 10p for every download – by far the largest payments available to any act choosing to give away their music online. The new social networking site designed to provide musicians – both signed and unsigned – with everything they need to further their careers, has been put together by industry pros to keep music free for the fans while paying the artist. The site is turning heads in the music industry as it gives the internet a much needed wake-up call. “I can imagine it’s going to be huge and why not?” says former Stereophonics star Stuart Cable. “Becoming a professional musician in a band is the hardest job in the world - so to do it this way is great."

“It's great that a website is trying to do something different and give unsigned bands a chance to make some extra revenue from their music. Anything that shakes the internet up and tries to slow down the rate of illegal downloading can only be a good thing,” adds Caroline Beavon, music journalist and presenter for Kerrang! Radio. Kerchoonz.com is currently locked in talks with both independent and major record labels to bring further content to the site, providing a comprehensive music catalogue for fans. Acts can even earn money by recommending other bands and artists to the site and, with no limit on the number of people you can recommend, it’s the hardest working acts that will reap the greatest rewards.

Black Britanyaa

East London Hip Hop crew Black Britanyaa thrive on doing things differently and bring you “The Windrush Volume 2”, so called because Volume 1 was the actual Black migrants! The Windrush Volume 2 pays tribute to the musical traditions and legacies of past UK pioneers in Black music.

Starting with the innovative SS Windrush generations of Ska and Highlife to the sound system influences of Lovers Rock and through to the pioneering development of Jungle. The release of the album bears historical significance as it coincides with the 60th anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush landing at Tilbury Docks.

In a world of formulaic music, this conceptual album runs like an anthropology of Black British music, and the group guide you through that musical journey with social insight and personal honesty. It boasts 10 quality tracks submerged in Hip-Hop with different sounds from around the world. From Peruvian pan pipes; to Spanish guitars and even 80’s British Pop which gives “The Windrush Volume 2” an eclectic feel. For the lead single Aliens, Black Britanyaa cleverly rework Sting’s fabulous “Englishman in New York”, and root it firmly in the Black British experience. The song encapsulates Black Britanyaa as the second and third generation of migrants, forging a new identity that can contain their Britishness and Blackness.

The final track Libation is the ancient African ritual of pouring out of spirits to honour the ancestors and this ancient tradition is recreated in music. The song gives a moving account of a family’s struggles (including domestic violence) and pays homage to the hardship of the Windrush Generation who came in the 50’s and 60’s. With the unique vocals of UK living legend Omar, this song makes for a strong follow- up single. The MCs show a full range of emotional capabilities as demonstrated on tracks like the dark and moody “Devil’s Peak” to the reluctant love ode of “Lonely Roads”.

All of which gives the album an organic and rounded touch. At a time when Hip-Hop has almost been strangled by the bling, this album is a refreshing tonic as it pushes the boundaries of Hip-Hop both musically and lyrically.

The Windrush Volume 2 will be released in the UK on December 1st 2008.

PASTOR TROY’S LATEST SERMON USHERS IN NEW ERA OF HIP HOP

Congregations of hip hop lovers everywhere are being drawn into the world vividly described by Pastor Troy on his latest offering Stay True (845 Entertainment).

Upon first listen, it becomes clear that Troy is no longer preaching to the choir. Instead, he takes aim at the unconverted -- the nonbelievers -- and gives them a deliciously devilish dose of their own medicine.

Boasting the talents of much-touted producers Cooley C, Drumm, P.NO and Shawty Redd.
Stay True finds Troy mixing it up with a new crop of music makers. The sound is still recognizable, however, and stays true to the renown, get-crunk-represent-the-dirty-south style that he introduced with his 1999 debut We Ready- I Declare War and 2001's Face Off.

The first single is “Well – Un – HUH,” a song best described as up tempo, rugged and real. Of the track Troy says: “ This song is a trademark phrase of mine that I made into a hook which I feel my fans will enjoy.”

Born Micah Levar Troy in College Park, GA, Troy, 24, is the son of a drill sergeant-turned-pastor who laid down strict household rules and made sure his son was introduced to the church at an early age. But like most kids on his block, the young Troy was also exposed to street life. It is that dichotomy, that contradiction of influences, that continues to be reflected in his music today: the respectful preacher's kid who knows better but can't resist indulging his naughty side; the gentlemanly boy next door who seems oblivious to the wiles of his street corner friends but, in actuality, is far craftier than they could ever be.

On Stay True, Troy flirts with religion in one breath, embraces street life in the next and somehow manages to treat them with equal reverence.

Recording the album proved to be a cathartic experience for the rapper. “This album was very relaxing due to the creative control I had in putting it together,” he said “I really enjoyed myself.”

Since his beginnings, Troy's ascension in rap has been steady, earning him the respect of his peers and his fans. This release marks Troy’s first release on (845 Entertainment Distributed by SMC/Fontana Universal). The move to an indie label is proving fruitful for the rapper – “This is cool because you don’t have to sell a million records to get paid and you have more artistic control.”

B-Legit

Long considered one of the top emcees on the left coast, B-Legit, AKA The Savage, is a bonafide rap star. COO of the independent powerhouse, Sick-Wid-It Records, the Vallejo native is recognized for contributing mightily to the Bay Area Hip Hop movement and overall culture, helping pave the way for artists among the likes of Mack 10, Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Keak Da Sneak and Sugar Free along the way. A centerpiece on genre defining albums such as Down and Dirty, Game Related and Money & Muscle, the gruff voiced game spitter is O.G. as they come.

Legit’s legend grew in 1996 when he signed a solo deal with Jive Records, subsequently releasing – Hemp Museum and Hempin’ Ain’t Easy (1998). His rise soon fell victim to the times though, as pop artists like Brittney Spears, Back Street Boys and NSync, were in high demand. As a result, emcees with devout Hip Hop followings like B Legit, suffered in the way of allotted money, time and attention from the major label. Fortunately, Allen Grumblet, president of Koch Records, was impressed enough with Bela’s hustle and flow to buy the rapper out of his contract with Jive. One hundred and thirty five thousand units later, the satisfied independent moved to push Hard 2 B Legit a September 2002 release.

Arguably one of his best albums to date, Hard… sold a modest 75,000 units. A relative success for the indie, B was forced to momentarily sever ties with Koch due to bootleg CD purchases (i.e. downloading and burned copies). Despite the financial woes of the label and its inability to provide significant budgets for promo tours/packages and distribution, 2004 provided B Legit the opportunity to form his own conglomerate – Block Movement Media Corporation – a decision independent of Sick-Wid-It.

“Sic-Wid-It is ‘records’ and ‘media’ covers the whole nine,” B reasons. “I wanted to have something that was going to identify [me] solo, so it was time to expand the wings a little bit.”
Between the years of 2003 and 2005, B began instituting mentoring programs for the youth in the way of seminars and presentations. An official sponsor for the Coats for Kids Xmas Drive in Detroit, Legit continued to prove his worth in and outside of the Bay Area. He delivered meaningful messages to youth in the Oakland California School District, spoke at various high schools and never missed an opportunity to stress the importance of education. Additionally, he coached youth basketball, dropped science as a panelist for a Hip Hop forum in San Francisco, and sponsored youth baseball and health educator athletic teams.

Outside of his philanthropic efforts 2003 remained positive for B-Legit’s music career as he toured the US and Canada, making frequent spot dates in Portland, Washington, Fresno, Modesto and a number of other Northwest hotspots. In the same breath, he performed with notable Hip Hop heavyweights such as Too Short, E-40, Yukmouth and Nelly, all the while maintaining his presence on radio (West Coast Reno – 93.7, KWYN and 106.1 KMEL) and in magazines (THE SOURCE, XXL, SHOWCASE, EXPLOSIVE, etc.).

Most recently B-Legit secured a deal with SMC Recordings and Universal Music Group subsidiary Fontana, effectively ending his three year absence from the game. “It gives me an opportunity to lead my own way,” Legit says. “This gives me a way to where I can custom design [my material]. Now I got a chance to really put on my CEO hat.”

A subtle departure form his signature sound, B-Legit’s new album, Block Movement, is Bay Area Hip Hop at its finest and possibly his most rounded work to date. Complete with producers from various regions of the country, Block Movement hits on all cylinders, beginning with the sonic movement down south. It continues to impress with old school mob music and mainstream thump, effectively delivering what the rapper likes to call “Feel Good Music.”

“It’s just music that you can feel,” Legit says. “It’s music with soulful hooks. Anybody that has a background from the South or the church, you can just feel those certain hymns and certain notes: the soul. [At the same time,] it’s whatever it is that makes you feel good. You get you a nice pair of shoes and a nice clean truck, drive off and listen to some feel good music.”

The Rick Rock produced “Guess Who’s Back,” featuring E-40, is currently setting B’s new standard, already earning a worthy amount of spins on the Bay Area radio stations. “That’s just to warm up my area to let them know I’m comin’ back,” he offers. “This is where the maturity and my support comes from: home.”

Mall (St. Louis) and Gold Fingers (Dallas), do their part on the production side as well, delivering respective bangers in their own right. “What they do is bring that Midwest, down South sound over the Bay Area lyrics,” B explains. “It’s a beautiful combination.” Bay area producers, including Richmond’s LJ Philly (“Friends” and “Wanna Know Your Name”), Ponte (“Kick It Tonight” and “I Can’t Change”) and Bedrock, also contribute, helping create B Legit’s most versatile album to date.

Beeda Weeda

Beeda Weeda extraordinaire, the 24 year-old Producer/Rapper from East Oakland, CA, hit the scene in the early 2006 with his first single “Turfs Up.” Soon after, he made Bay Area history by remixing the smash to include such greats as E-40, Turf Talk, Dem Hoodstars, Too Short, San Quinn and Eddie P. You may have heard his production for such artists as: Suga Free, Yukmouth, Askari X, Under Survalance and the Brooklyn-based Wildcats. You may have heard him rhyme on a number of Bay Area compilations and collaborations. Beeda's homebase is Oakland’s PTB Records (Pushing the Beat) who not to long ago merged with Clear Label Records (founded by Tajai of the legendary Hieroglyphics) to form the ClearBeat label. This was unexpected move for both labels considering they march to beat of a different drum, (for lack of better words) yet both have had great independent success.

Young Beeda Weeda hails from the notorious Murder Dubbs neighborhood in East Oakland, which sets the backdrop for his raw and uncut lyrics. He first showcased his skills on a national scale with Homework, an all-original mix-album (ClearBeat, May 2006; Mixed by the Bay Area Mixtape Kings The Demolition Men) in May of 2006. Not long after Beeda released his now classic debut album, Turfology 101 (ClearBeat/Hiero Imperium, July 2006) which has definitely created a major buzz and enabled Beeda to solidify his presence in the industry. The “Turfs Up” video aired on 32 stations and generated over 1,000,000 hits online. Beeda was also number 3 on Myspace's top 10 Hip Hop/Rap artists.

Even without such impressive stats, it is easy to see that Beeda is talented and exudes a captivating swagger. He is also versatile, prolific and produces classics. Beeda plans to further build his legacy in 2008 and beyond. Since dropping Turfology 101, Beeda has featured on numerous albums and made several TV appearances. He has also filmed 2 more videos; "On Like Shit” (from the Homework album) and "U Don't Hear My Tummy" (from his upcoming SMC/Thizz/Clearbeat, Fall 2008 album, The Thizness). The latter is in heavy rotation online and generating major views. Beeda also recently released his second all-original Mix-album "Talk Shit Swallow Spit" (ClearBeat, 2008; also arranged by the Demolition Men), and is now putting the final touches on his 2nd full-length album, Baserock Babies (ClearBeat, Summer 2008). This album, produced by Dj Fresh of “Tonite Show” fame, is a throwback to the gritty sounds golden-era Hip-Hop. All of this is done in preparation for the release of his opus, Turf Radio (Clearbeat, 2009), which promises to be another classic. Yes, the boy is busy! Obviously a trendsetter and not a follower; Beeda Weeda is definitely on his way to superstardom.

Scarface

Scarface quickly became the South's most admired rapper and remained so throughout the '90s after breaking away from the Geto Boys to launch his solo career in 1991. Even if he never scored any national hits or stormed up the Billboard charts with any of his numerous albums throughout the '90s, no one could question his clout throughout the South. He essentially defined what it meant to be a Southern thug rapper years before anyone even coined the term Dirty South. This became glaringly evident in the late '90s when a massive wave of young MCs arose from Houston, New Orleans, and Memphis emulating his style of hard-boiled, ghetto-bred, straight-up hardcore rapping. Besides serving as the father of Southern thug rap, it seemed as if every hardcore rapper wanted to align himself with Scarface during the '90s -- everyone from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre to 2Pac and Master P collaborated with the former Geto Boy -- all in an attempt to foster credibility among the loyal Southern rap audience.

Yet despite his unquestionable influence, Scarface never crossed over to mainstream acceptance. His albums were often plagued with filler, his lyrics were simply too harsh for radio, and his uncompromising devotion to producer Mike Dean led to a stagnant, albeit trademark, sound. Still, likely because Scarface never crossed over and remained aligned to the streets, his influence never waned, making him one of the few veterans able to sustain in the here-today, gone-tomorrow rap game. In the early 2000s, Def Jam Records rewarded his staying power with a lucrative contract, a wealth of industry connections, and a powerful marketing push. Scarface consequently enjoyed the most successful album of his career, The Fix (2002), and a revival of interest in his back catalog, which his former label, Rap-a-Lot, repackaged that same year on Greatest Hits.

Before Brad Jordan became known as Scarface, he called himself Akshen. As such, he began his rap career first as a solo artist in his native Houston during the mid-'80s for James Smith's then fledging Rap-a-Lot label. Smith was trying to launch a group he tagged the Geto Boys, and he eventually asked Akshen to join the group in the late '80s. The Geto Boys' debut album -- Grip It! On That Other Level (1990), later repackaged and re-released that same year simply as The Geto Boys -- shocked many with its vivid depictions of violence and its overall extreme nature. This album featured the song "Scarface," which introduced Akshen's alter ego, a title he would keep from that point onward. The ensuing controversy surrounding the group's debut put the Geto Boys on the map and set the stage for the impressive We Can't Be Stopped (1991). In the wake of the group's national success came solo albums, one of which being Scarface's debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back (1991). The album made it evident who the group's most talented member was, and the acclaim showered on Scarface resulted in bitter tensions among his fellow Geto Boys, Bushwick Bill and Willie D. By the time Scarface returned with his follow-up album, The World Is Yours (1993), his reputation overshadowed that of his group's. Willie D consequently departed, and the the Geto Boys never again rivaled We Can't Be Stopped, releasing half-hearted, albeit popular, efforts with a new lineup before later reuniting in the late '90s. In the meantime, Scarface continued to funnel his efforts into additional solo efforts: The Diary (1994) and Untouchable (1997). He then released the double-disc My Homies (1998), a bloated effort laden with guests, many of the South's leading rappers.

It wasn't until 2000, though, that Scarface won substantial admiration from the greater rap community with Last of a Dying Breed, his most personal and focused album in years. As a result, he was awarded Lyricist of the Year at the 2001 Source Awards and was offered a promising deal with Def Jam Records. The powerhouse East Coast label wanted Scarface to helm its Def Jam South subsidiary division, and the rapper obliged, first signing Ludacris, who became an overnight superstar, and then releasing his own album, The Fix (2002). 1st record on SMC is a group from Killeen, TX named Green City, he appears on the album, available for interviews, etc. Green City – 7 members. Heard music when he was at a gym and found out these guys were not on a label and spoke to them that day and signed them on the spot. He met group in Houston (they flew in from Kailleen) 2 weeks later and Green City began recording their album – “Brand New Money”.

Scotty Lee – CEO of label Green City and he also founded the group, but not a rapper, a business man. Group was his dream, he brought the guys together in high school to form the group.
Green City – what does it mean – it represents the name Killeen, it rhymes with the city and it also represents money. All the members attended Killeen high school and became good friends, Spark made grills for people in school, that is how he met the others.
Green City is also a click, and a movement – there are other people that are in the click, but not as rappers.

Killean is a Milatary town and it is connected to Ft. Hood (the biggest millarty base in the world). 45 minutes north of Austin. How is their style different – they are real 80’s babies (early 20’s), they are young and new artists are their legends and who they grew up listening to – Swishahouse, Fabulous, Ludacris, TI, Bum D, Scarface hero (even before the deal)
Being from a military town – there are people from all over the country and they hear stuff from all over the place. Have a sound that is mixed with Texas influence with a whole national feel. Nothing like the Houston sound.

What is it like working with Face? Face is not Hollywood at all, he is well respected, and is very down to earth. Easy to chill with, regular dude, “Uncle Face”. It is surreal that they are working with him – he is a hero, a legend in their eyes, Face makes it real easy by being real and acting like a regular dude. No other Texas person can give you such a big co-sign is Face. Can’t lose with him backing them up/haiving their back.

SMC PLEDGES ALLEGIANCE TO KILLER MIKE & GRIND TIME OFFICIAL

San Francisco, CA, November 6, 2007 - Killer Mike and his Atlanta based label, Grind Time Official, have joined forces with Bay Area based record label, SMC Recordings. The first release from this dynamic partnership will be the continuation of Killer Mike's critically acclaimed Pledge series and will be titled, I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind II.

Killer Mike got his formal introduction when he first appeared on the Outkast single "The Whole World" for which he won a Grammy. Mike then signed to Outkast's Aquemini label, which was distributed by Columbia Records, and in 2003 released his debut album, "Monster" which went Gold. After a short stay at Big Boi’s label, Purple Ribbon/Virgin, Mike decided it was time for him to make moves on his own and he established Grind Time Official in 2004. With no distribution, Grind Time still made an impact with Killer Mike releases including, “Dec Crack” in 2004, “The Killer” which won the SEA Mixtape of the Year Award in 2005, and “I Pledge Allegiance to The Grind I”, which won Best Street Album at this years Ozone Awards.

The first single from I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind II will be released in December, the street date for the album release will be early 2008. Pledge II boasts an impressive line up of both Southern and Bay Area rappers, which will include appearances by notable legends, 8 Ball and MJG, UGK and Trae, with more to be announced. As he did with “I Pledge Allegiance to The Grind I”, Mike will reunite with producers Chaotic Beats, Heatwave and The D Majors for part II and also will include beats from Marvelous J and The Beat Bullies.

Killer Mike is excited about teaming up with SMC, about being his own boss and is looking forward to bringing new music to his fans, “If you work hard and grind hard, it will pay off in the end! Mistah F.A.B. readies his highly anticipated indie release, DA BAYDESTRIAN

Although Mistah F.A.B. has endured much scrutiny in the national press over the past few months for his single, “Ghost Ride It”, he prepares himself for his upcoming release on SMC Recordings this May with DA BAYDESTRIAN.

Born and raised in Oakland, CA, FAB encountered his first taste of fame when he entered The Source Magazine’s “Unsigned Hype Freestyle Battle” in 1999 and placed 3rd. This brought him to the attention of a local Bay Area based label – Straight Hits, who signed him in 2001. FAB released his first underground album with the label in 2003 entitled, “Nig-Latin”.

Bay Area legend, Mac Dre took notice of this fledgling rapper and enlisted him as one of the original members of the Thizz Nation. With the backing of this renowned rapper Mistah F.A.B. released “Mac Dre Presents Mistah F.A.B. – Son of a Pimp” in 2005 featuring the huge regional hit – “Super Sic Wit It” featuring E-40. The single ends up taking the Hyphy movement in a whole different direction, with the song lyric – “I do the dummy, retarded, and ride the yellow bus”. The Hyphy movement revolves around acting a fool and FAB took it one step further with these lyrics.

The song and the album propelled FAB to regional stardom. Soon every artist in the bay area started calling, wanting him to guest star on their albums. He was also featured on the MTV special, “My Block – The Bay” which caught the interest of many major labels - FAB decided to roll with Atlantic Records.

It is not unusual these days for an artist to be signed to two labels at once. After negotiating with Atlantic, the Bay Area giant, SMC Recordings was able to secure a deal with FAB as well. Will Bronson, Co-Founder of SMC speaks on his longstanding business relationship with FAB, “FAB and my history is crazy, we pretty much came up together. To be involved in this album and everything FAB's got going on- as corny as it sounds- is beyond business, this shit is personal, but that’s the way independent music should be."

Recording his album – DA BAYDESTRIAN in record time, the release will also feature FAB’s infamous DVD, “The Freestyle King” as a bonus as well as a “Yellow Bus Pass” to download “Son of a Pimp” for free. FAB explains why he decided to add extra features to his album, “"I'm puttin the Bonus DVD and free download of 'Son Of A Pimp' in there because that's the album that got my buzz crazy in the Bay. We're sayin' "Da Baydestrian" is the prequel to "Da Yellow Bus Rydah" so I wanna give you as much of me to get you ready for that."

DA BAYDESTRIAN will feature production by Rob-E, Sean-T, Traxxamillion, Young L among others and guest appearances from Too Short, Keak Da Sneak, Fabo from D4L, Mesy Marv and Spice 1. FAB’s next track off the album, “Get This Shit Together” has already been leaked on line and has been popping up on West coast radio stations. FAB wants everyone to know, "'Da Baydestrian' is for all the fans that’s been waiting for the last two years for something new. It's a project that's gonna rep the Bay to the fullest no strings attached and show everyone there's more to me than just goin' dumb. People forget that I really spit and think that all I do is ride Da Yellow Bus".

Never one to slow down, F.A.B. is already back in the studio working on his next album, “Da Yellow Bus Rydah” being released on Atlantic Records, "I know everyone is like what's up with the whole Atlantic deal? As one of the forefathers of the Latin gangsta rap movement, Capone-e has made quite a name for himself while still only in his ‘20s. Capone-e’s latest effort, Don’t Get It Twisted (SMC Recordings) is an album designed to set the record straight about who rules the West Coast music scene.

Growing up in San Gabrielle Valley (SGV) in East LA, Capone-e was fed a steady diet of Nate Dogg, West Coast gangsta rap and oldies. He was heavily inspired by gang culture and watched as many of his childhood friends found themselves embroiled and eventually vanquished by it. Instead of falling into the same trap, Capone-e redirected his efforts into performing at house parties. He is now regarded as the first rapper to come out of the SGV and is a well known presence along the West coast.

The album, Don’t Get It Twisted, features a lead single by the same name, featuring the mega-successful Twista. With the release scheduled for Fall of 2006, Don’t Get It Twisted features production by Fingerz and Lil Joe, as well as additional cameos by Lil Easy E, Bizzy Bone, Layzie Bone and Lil Flip. His will continue his collaboration with Lil Flip later this year on an effort entitled “Lil Flip and Mr. Capone-e present…”

Don’t Get It Twisted is a record that all can enjoy - perfect for a party, but still gritty enough to earn respect on the streets. Capone-e is confident that his new alliance with SMC Recordings will ensure that the album reaches everyone with ears. “I like SMC for their independent label style, but they work hard and are organized. They deal with PR, radio and promotions like a major label and I like that they have distribution by Fontana,” he says.
Ralph Tashjian, CEO of SMC Recordings, shares in Capone-e’s excitement. “When I heard this album, it confirmed my belief that Capone-e was a perfect fit for SMC. He’s a break out star and we expect incredible sales,” he predicts, “This one can go the distance.”

San Quinn was born in Oakland, CA and later moved to San Francisco at age three to the Fillmore District. Like so many other rappers, he began rhyming to stay out of trouble. Quinn was raised in the same neighborhood as San Francisco legends- Rappin 4-Tay, JT the Bigga Figga, Messy Marv, and Andre Nickatina (AKA Dre Dog). Signed to Get Low Records at the tender age of fourteen, San Quinn released his first song "SFC" with GLP and RBL Posse. His debut album entitled Don't Cross Me under Get Low/Buck Fifty Records followed shortly thereafter. The genesis for his current stardom began, as Quinn went on to work with Master P and was featured on West Coast Bad Boyz 1 & 2, both of which have been certified Gold. He then dropped Live N' Direct, which featured the San Francisco anthem "Come On In" under Get Low Records in 1995.

By 1996, Northern California had created a deafening music buzz, nationally. Priority Records was doling out a handful of distribution deals, which included Master P’s No Limit Records, along with Get Low Records. With news of a new deal, San Quinn jumped right back in the studio and recorded The Hustle Continues under Get Low/Priority Records. By the age of eighteen, Quinn had been featured on multiple gold certified albums, released three solo albums, and became apart of the group: G.L.P. Quinn was at a turning point when he and his cousin Messy Marv joined forced and released Explosive Mode in 1998. From there Quinn began to tour extensively, performing with Jay-Z, Master P, and Monica, among others.

San Quinn's mission became clear; he decided to do whatever it took to bring San Francisco and the Bay Area to the forefront of the music industry. In 1998, he launched Done Deal Entertainment and by 2001, Quinn released The Mighty Quinn, which featured the single "Give It Up.” This track brought back the resurgence of Bay Area radio support for local music. Done Deal collaborated with former NBA superstar and longtime friend, J.R. Rider, to release San Quinn’s follow up album I Give U My Word. It was not until Quinn collaborated with SMC Recordings in 2006, that he released his biggest selling solo album to date, The Rock-Pressure Makes Diamonds, which spawned the regional smash “Hell Yeah.”

Quinn continues his partnership with SMC Recordings as he readies his second solo album, From A Boy To A Man, with the Bay Area label. Quinn’s achievements have helped shine a spotlight on his hometown’s music scene and looks forward to continued triumphs!

Grandmaster Flash will be coming to the UK to host and DJ at the Alizé Remixed party on the 25th October 2008 at Paper night club in London.

Alizé remixed 2008 was a nationwide competition and UK club tour in search of the freshest DJ talent within the UK. The winners from across five regions each received £1000 cash and got the opportunity to hit the turntables alongside a legendary DJ legend including Jazzy Jeff and Tim Westwood!

The grand finale ends on 25th October 2008 at Paper nightclub with the ultimate legend Grandmaster Flash!

Sidestepping the pitfalls of his East London environment, he honed his delivery alongside the likes of Dizzee Rascal and Wiley, developing a confident poise absent anywhere else in the capital. Standing out from the rest of his peers, on his 18th birthday Robinson was offered the chance to make the leap from the underground to the mainstream in the form of a record contract with 679/Warner. Knocking back promising prospects in sport and academia, the young MC made the transition to an artist and accepted the proposal – and he has never looked back.

Released in 2005, Kano’s debut ‘Home Sweet Home’ was quickly heralded as an urban classic. With appearances from Mike Skinner, and production from himself, Mikey J and Fraser T Smith, Kano built an eclectic fanbase; a heartthrob and a hood hero both, singles like ‘Brown Eyes’ and ‘Nite Nite’ proved he could create chart hits with credibility. A MOBO performance of typical Me was pronounced by Public Enemy’s Chuck D as ‘The best performance,’ he had seen in a long time. However the standout track for many will be ‘P’s & Q’s’ – an underground anthem and a seminal grime classic.

The sophomore effort ‘London Town’ arrived in 2007 and offered an insight into London living. As well as further cementing his position as a commodifiable musician, the record featured noticeable musical contribution from Kate Nash, ex-Blur frontman and Gorillaz brainchild Damon Albarn who sang and produced on the single ‘Feel Free’, and UK garage/R&B poster boy Craig David with whom Kano released ‘This Is The Girl’. Both tracks hit the top 20. The album also showcased Kane’s Jamaican heritage, with a noticeable reggae influence most epitomised by the collaboration with dancehall superstar Vybz Kartel - ‘Buss It Up’ which fused dancehll and grime effortlessly.

As one of the few underground star’s to cross over to the mainstream, Kano has appeared in NME, i-D, RWD, Dazed & Confused (ETC ETC), been playlisted on Radio1, Choice, Galaxy and Kiss and has performed everywhere from Glastonbury to Jools Holland. Among the awards won, Kano was named Best Newcomer at the MOBO’s, Best UK artist at the BET awards and was nominated for a BRIT award.

After all the awards, accolades and acclaim, why is Kane revisiting the place where it all started? “You could say I’m going back there, but I’m going forward at the same time,” Kane states about ‘140 Grime St’, an album that represents the cycle of his career so far. “The album really tells a story. It begins with me in my bedroom wanting to get out, but the end is me after I’ve been through the whole industry scene and now I wanna do it my own way.”

Robinson is referring to his new independent status as label owner of BPM Recordings. Rising above label politics, Kano has taken the reigns to his career into his own hands after an amicable split from 679. Full creative control has allowed him to produce the most challenging project of his career whilst tackling what is probably the first fully conceptual grime album ever. “140 beats per minute is the tempo,’ Grime’ is the vibe and the community I come from and ‘Street’ is where we came up, and who the music appeals to,” says Kano of the album’s concept.

‘Hustler’ is the first single from the album, and it exemplifies the cyclic evolution of Kano as an artist with the first verse directing the listener with TomTom-like precision through the life of a pre-signed Kano whilst the second verse presents the mature MC who he is today. “It was the perfect single cos it explains so much,” he shares. What with the hefty horns and hypnotic hook, some have likened it to the classic ‘P’s & Q’s’. “Wow that’s a lot to live up to,” Kano smiles knowingly.

Grime legend Wiley provides the beat and a verse on ‘Anywhere We Go’ which sees the long awaited collaboration between the grime pioneers. “I respect Wiley as a producer and an MC,” Kano remarks. The two heavyweights throw respect for each other back and forth as they reference each other’s standout lyrics. “That’s a mutual respect thing. Wiley was one of the people I listened to on the radio coming up, I used to recite his lyrics in my bedroom.”

Another artist who has contributed a beat is Skepta from the highly lauded Boy Better Know collective, while DaVinChe, producer of ‘P’s & Q’s’ provides the soundtrack for ‘I Like It’ and ‘Don’t Come Around Here’. The latter is a forward-thinking song that relays street tales from the perspective of victims of crime. “It’s putting out a positive message without preaching,” Kano says. “ It’s doing it in a way that young people can connect with. It’s not one of those bohemian coffee house poetry corner protests. It’s a hard beat which kids can bop their head to, but if you really listen to the undercurrent of the track it’s a positive message I’m trying to get across and it relates to the time that we are living in.” What starts off as a dark foreboding song is soon flipped on its head by a clever twist as Kano addresses gun crime, single parent households and the lack of positive black role models. “It’s not gonna change the world - that’s a bigger job than any track,” he admits. “It’s just my way of addressing the kids.

As well as DaVinChe, Wiley and Skepta, the album also sees long-term collaborators Ghetto and Mikey J (who produced 9 of the LP’s 16 tracks). Completing the narrative, the album’s finale ‘Aim For The Sky’ sees Kano in a thoughtful mood as he analyses his progression from day one up until the present. Is he ready to be his own boss? “It’s going well so far,” he smirks before adding, “I haven’t had to fire myself like Alan Sugar!

The next step is to take the album on tour, with Kano planning a full-blown assault on venues in the UK as well as Europe. The tour, which will hit clubs as well as traditional venues may be as groundbreaking as the album with plans to involve all the album contributors along the way.

Also not wanting to disappoint fans who he has accumulated along the way, Kano is hoping to jump into the studio very soon to record a follow up album to be released early next year. “The next one I’m just gonna go crazy. Explore more genres. Work with artists outside of the scene and just make an international album that will put my name on the map.”

“What I wanted to get across with ‘140 Grime St’ was the vibe and the energy of the scene. I also wanted to cement the position I have, my situation and how I’m trying to move forward through the industry,” concludes Kano. “It’s just MY story.”

Sway signs to Akon’s Kon Live label
After months of rumours and speculation, Sway has now officially signed to Akon’s Kon Live label. The multi-album deal applies worldwide with the exception of Europe and the UK where Sway retains his celebrated independence and will continue to release through his own Dcypha Productions outlet. Sway is the first European artist to be signed by five time Grammy nominee Akon and joins the star’s Kon Live and Konvict Muzik roster of talent alongside the highly successful T-Pain, famed for his collaborations with Kanye West and Lil Wayne, singer songwriter Colby O’Donis and Canadian rapper Kardinal Offishall who recently celebrated a Billboard Hot 100 top 10 with Dangerous.

The Signature LP release date change
In related news the release of Sway’s new album, The Signature LP, has now been moved back to 6th October. The delay is due to the late addition of Silver & Gold – a collaborative track with Akon that marks the start of Sway’s endeavours with Kon Live and Akon and which was initially held back until contracts were finalised.

B-Boy Championships on TV

Don’t miss the first episode of the Sony Ericsson B-Boy Championships TV series this Sunday 28th September. The program will be aired on Channel 4 at 8.20am.

This will be the first time that b-boy culture receives mainstream television coverage with a program dedicated to the UK B-Boy Championships World Series. Over the next six weeks, you will see some of the best breakers, poppers and lockers from across the globe battling it out for a place on the World Finals stage at London’s Brixton Academy on 12th October for the chance to be crowned as the ultimate b-boy crew on the planet.

The first episode features the Korean Elimination event which took place back in June and the following episodes will show documented footage and reports on the other elimination events. The final program will be an hour long special about the World Finals.

It introduces us to the movers and shakers of the scene, such as the new wave of record producers like Tedd Josiah of Bluezebra records and Steve Ominde of Soul Child records and artists such as Nazizi, Big Mike and DJ John. Originally inspired by the fashions and musical styles of the American scene, Kenyan hip hop has quickly established its own voice, with its artists rapping in both Swahili and English and dealing with topics relevant to their everyday lives.

Wanguhu’s camera follows his subjects from their homes in the ghettoes and suburbs of Nairobi through their producers’ studios all the way up to their live performances in front of thousands of avid fans, giving us a unique access to the broader picture of the culture and society of this vibrant country than we’re usually afforded. As Tedd Josiah says, “Kenya is not just about lions, giraffes and fast-running men.” Once considered a passing fad, local hip hop artists are now giving their foreign rivals a run for their money, and are now a phenomenal presence on Kenya’s TV and radio airwaves. New Baby J Album!

You may think you know the Baby J sound. He’s the man who put smiles on faces with Mpho Skeef’s supremely chirpy Holla, and struck gold with his ska-stepping, all-star remix of Valerie for girl of the moment Amy Winehouse. The track reached number two in the national charts, stayed there for eleven weeks and spent five weeks at the top of MTV’s airplay chart. His soul patent, comparable to the now ubiquitous Kanye West method of using sped-up samples, produced Rukus's heavily rotated road lullaby Let It Go, taken from J’s much-applauded album FTP. He’s been hailed ‘The UK’s Best Underground Producer’ at the Urban Music awards and FTP was nominated for two BBC 1xtra mixtape awards, in ‘Best mixtape’ and ‘Best concept’ categories.

Baby J is a one-man-magnet when it comes to working with the cream of UK hip-hop and R&B, from home-grown thoroughbreds to below-radar up-and-comers and his own personal squad of emcees that always benefit from a Baby J leg-up. Presumably he needs to man the mic booth on a one-in, one-out basis, judging by the preceding, sixty plus emcee FTP2 mixtape. Jehst, Sir Smurf Lil, Dirty Diggers’ Young Max, Skibadee and Dynamite MC are the iceberg’s tip to what is a bulging beats rolodex. On the album front, J contributed notably to Skinnyman’s all-conquering Council Estate of Mind, and Blade’s Guerrilla Tactics. And all this is after putting in the groundwork earlier in his career by hooking-up with Wu-Tang Clan, Brand Nubian and dead prez no less.

However, Baby Food – a full decade on from J’s UK-meets-US debut The Birth - is based on a distinctly sour palette. Sure, he’s prepared another menu of UK A-listers and those bound to occupy one-to-watch column inches. But J isn’t his usual chipper, optimistic self, though it does show that he’s not one to cook with the same ingredients time after time, particularly with his use of rawer materials, ‘traditional’, in-the-flesh instruments and declaring Baby Food’s austerity as a sample-free zone. It’s a morose, distrustful look at the ways of the world, and the opener If I Could Do It All Again, a stripped down, country-smoked folk lament featuring despairing songstress Jaymay and streams of conscience from NYC’s A-Alikes, shows Baby J ain’t playing.

Ashley ‘Asher D’ Walters sounds like he’s been on the wrong end of a few fibs and looks to put the record straight on Lies, showing Baby J’s R&B radar remains bang-on with Nathan on the hook. Farma G gives humankind a frosty reception, but it’s as a weary troubadour rather than Task Force firer on Love and Peace, backed by a school choir and more folk, fiddle-playing etchings. Lowkey is another struggling to make the sense of the day on the piano-drizzled Learn to Live Again, with Baby J engaging his crossover/mass market intuition thanks to Davey MacManus of The Crimea providing an exasperatedly cracked chorus (think Timbaland putting on One Republic, but with a UK frostiness). The similar combination of hip-hop rhymes set to acoustic reflections makes Its Time a further distinguished departure, with David Gibb supporting Moorish Delta 7’s Malik and his narratives of youth gone awry.

The encompassing air is pensively rain-sodden and understatedly subdued. Enter Jun Tzu, the incendiary Belfast blast-off rollicking over club-barging drum machines as Wee Jonny brings the album’s spite to boiling point. The same drum machines that are given short shrift on the posse shot Midlands Anthem repping Coventry, Birmingham, Nottingham and everywhere in between. There, it’s not all doom and gloom, with Alex Blood brightening the scene on the lead single Wake Up on some seize-the-day business. In the mould of The Streets’ Fit But You Know It, Ruff Nek Set The Trend has Million Dan rocking n rolling in inimitable jumping-bean fashion, showing he can despatch any beat bounced at him. The chorus comes courtesy of Mark Ronson’s live show vocalist Tawiah. The essence of Let It Go sees Ironbraidz and Mellow Baku share the sweet sentiments of Inspiration.

Doing full live performances on the night will be UK Hip Hop legends Task Force. Hailing from North London, rappers Chester P and Farma G have had a cult / legendary status amongst London hip-hoppers for coming up to 10 years now.

Also performing on the night will be the drummer from the legendary dance outfit The Future Sound of London – Virgil Howe. Coming from a musical family, he is the son of Steve Howe; the guitarist from the prog-rock legends Yes. Virgil has been causing his own buzz with his new live show where he creates a wall of sound with just himself, a drum kit, a loop pedal and a sampler. This live show really has to be seen to be believed.

Also on the night will be young pretenders – Captain Strange. This young outfit blend ska, punk and funk into a modern day sounding Madness for the “Playstation Generation”. In fact, Suggs has gone on record to saying he is a fan of the Captain. It might be time to swap the baggy trousers for some skinny ones now…

The night will be hosted by the on-stage energy ball known as Orifice Vulgatron from the Foreign Beggars outfit and current UK Human Beatbox Champion MC Zani. Between the 2 of them, expect beats, lyrics, and a party to be seeping from their microphones. Soundtracking the night will be some of the finest DJs from all over London.

This is only the first night and the line-ups are only gonna get bigger and better.

This November sees 3 x UK dates from the Wu-tang Clan's founder member GZA The Genius who’s in town celebrating the launch of his recent album 'Pro Tools'. With dates in Glasgow, London and Bristol, fans can expect brand spanking new material. The GZA needs no introduction. It's as simple as that. Go back to the original Wu-Tang album, 'Enter The Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers', and the art speaks for itself. He is the force behind the greatest hip hop group the world has ever seen, both musically and culturally.

Regarded by many as the intellectual and philosophical heart of the Clan, The GZA formed the group with The RZA and Ol' Dirty Bastard after becoming massively disillusioned with the industry and with a resolve to do things their own way. He is a masterful (intelligent) ghetto storyteller without being ignorant. He spits thought provoking, street-bred raw lyrics, he's the Wu-Tang Clan's fountain of wisdom. (And that's no small thing, when you consider the latest venture from the Wu camp, Rza's Wuchess.com, a Wu-tang Clan-themed-chess site where you can practice your strategy skills, play other fans and maybe even go up against a Clan member!) He has smashed it with work under the Wu-Tang Clan and with his own solo projects such as his albums ‘Liquid Swords’, ‘Beneath The Surface’ ‘Grandmasters’ (with DJ Muggs) and ‘Legend Of The Liquid Sword’.

He’s also the genius behind the great movie soundtrack ‘Ghost Dog’, in addition to appearing in Jim Jarmusch's film 'Coffee and Cigarettes' opposite Bill Murray. Quite a resume!

Buggsy

Buggsy has been creating a storm in his home town of Bristol ever since he won the inter-schools poetry slam. Through countless group work he has matured into a conscious, fast-spitting rhymer making it on his own.

Mr Bang On is a mere 18 years old but he has already made a huge name for himself having had his debut mix-tape mounted on the front of the prestigious Hip Hop Connection magazine.

Stig & Syntax

Bringing a much needed comedy approach to their music, while still being able to maintain their serious sides, Stig and Syntax are a world away from your average stern faced collective. Without a single reference to their designer clothes, street life or thuggery, instead they choose to opt for both intelligent observational and self-depreciating humour, this odd couple are more than content with not fitting in.

After 3 months of headline guests from the US in the shape of DJ Neil Armstrong, Sadat X and Bobbito matched by storming sets from our residents we are bringing back to the UK for this extremely special album launch party for the UK's most prolific and respected Hip-Hop producer who is pulling out all the stops and calling in an all star line up of MCs & singers to join him.

Baby J is the UK's very own Kanye West. Both hailing away from their respective nations' perceived centers of Hip-Hop they have both become experts in their field and man-magnets for the finest in Hip-Hop & R&B talent. Having struck gold with his ska remix of Mark Ronson's "Valerie" featuring girl of the moment Amy Winehouse which reached number 2 in the national charts and stayed there for eleven weeks as well as spending 5 weeks at the top of MTV's airplay chart Baby J's star is shining brighter than ever. With production credits for American Hip-Hop giants including Wu-Tang Clan, Brand Nubian and Dead Prez for his new "Baby Food" album he has selected a stella line up of UK vocal talent many of whom will be performing on the night. Once again he has shown his credentials as a studio giant and will be showing how those talents are matched by his skills on the decks as he rocks the house for the dedicated party people.

Shortee Blitz is a shining light of the Hip-Hop scene in the UK. Whether supporting traveling US stars, holding it down on one of his two weekly Kiss FM shows or tearing the roof off clubs all over the globe one thing is for certain and that is that this MOBO award winning DJ is always going to be spinning with a smile on his face. Even more so now he is a resident at for a night dedicated to the Hip-Hop & Soul styles he truly loves.

DJ MK first came to prominence through his now infamous mid 90's mixtapes that are still the prize possessions of those wise enough to keep their tape decks well oiled. They now represent the blueprint for the sounds that MK will be spinning at this new night. When away from his day jobs as Roots Manuva's DJ & as Kiss FM's Thursday night Hip-Hop DJ extraordinaire he will be found doing what he does best, rocking crowds with the sounds of his beloved Hip-Hop.

Spin Doctor is the driving force behind the phenomenal success of The Doctor's Orders and while not planning domination of the UK's party scene is most at ease behind a set of decks. The early influence of his 5 older brothers and sisters record collections developed into an obsession with soul tinged music of all styles which he uses to this day when treating dance-floors to his fearless sets of party platters.

The B-Boy Cypher is a circle in which dancers display their skills in a battle of one-upmanship. Each month London's finest b-boys and girls will be heading to the west end to display their finesse to the sounds of the very best b-boy DJs in the business. Skeg has been the driving force behind the ever-popular Breakin' Bread nights for the past 10+ years and has developed an ability to cut up Funk records unrivalled in the capital. DJ Hooch was dropping bombs at his legendary Funkin' Pussy night, the longest running weekly Hip-Hop & Funk club known to mankind, before many of the current crop of Hi-Hop heads were out of short trousers. As the man responsible for the annual UK B-Boy Championships his credentials among the dancing community are unparalleled. As a talented B-Boy himself D.Bo knows exactly what sounds they want to hear when hitting the floor and he will not disappoint!

Sway

Sway's musical magic will be beamed into the front room of millions next week thanks to a performance on the BBC's flagship music programme Later With Jools Holland. Sway's debut on the show will see him ably assisted by fellow North-Londoner Lemar for a live version of current single Saturday Night Hustle. Later airs live at 10.00pm on Tuesday, and again at 11.35pm on Friday.

Sway is also set to return to the live domain in full effect with the UK dates listed below. The shows will be the first chance to catch Sway performing material from his forthcoming album, The Signature LP, and include a special one-off launch party on 2nd October at London's Embassy nightclub.

Born in the heart of Pittsburgh, upcoming phenomenon Nick Rage is quickly becoming a household name not just nationally, but internationally too. Rewinding to the early stages of his career, Nick began writing music between the ages of 11 to 13, and made his first recording at the age of 16, lending his vocals on other artist’s songs. Nick then began to polish his style, which has been compared to the likes of LL Cool J, and Tech N9ne, which are coincidently two of Nick Rage’s major influences, alongside the likes of Ill Bill and Royce Da 5’9.

Nick Rage’s debut release came at the age of 19, in the form of “Burgh Villain Vol.1”. This created the initial buzz around Pittsburgh for Nick, and gave him the opportunity to hook up with the likes of Cassius, Conspiracy, Pheenixx, G30, Tw12ve Gauge, Young Kap and Moine Luke. Then Nick Rage’s career rocketed quicker than an N.A.S.A aircraft, as he has featured on the DefJam DMA mixtape, along with DJ Domination’s “Coast to Coast Mixtape”. The respective names speak for themselves; however Nick really put his first foot in the industry when he hooked up with Royce Da 5’9 to record the track “Burgh to the D”

Now at the age of 22 Nick Rage has returned with his sophomore mixtape “Dead to Society”. The sixteen-track mixtape displays Nick’s ability to switch up styles from an unearthly underground approach, to a very appealing, and radio friendly sound. Nick Rage possesses the best of both worlds, and “Dead To Society” caters for every musical taste. With already over 500 copies handed out locally, Nick intends to push his name internationally, and “Dead to Society” is proving to be the foundations for him to do so.
